He was...Hi, just read your blcg about Tom Veryzer. He was a local sports hero in the town of Islip, NY. He is also the first in the Islip area to play professional sports (Boomer Easaison being next). Why would I know this? Because I also went to the same school as he did, but many years later. I remember as a kid that while we were Met and Yankee fans, many of us would go see Tom play when he was in town. It was really cool that he started to play for the NY Mets, but I think he broke his leg sliding into second and was out for the rest of the year. tom's replacement was Ron gardenhire current manager of the Twins. Tom was a great player, but his father also named Tom, was probably a bigger influence in Islip.
